In Rio de Janeiro people are building big cement walls around the shantytowns. The people who live there are saying that this is to shut them out, while others say it is to protect the rainforests around them. Many people feel imprisoned in the walls since they can't roam aroundthe way they used. But because they have almost no freedom of speech they can't say anything.
The wall around Santa Marta was started in March with and it plans to spend $17 million on more walls around more shantytowns. Its estimated that about 20% of the 6 million people in Rio live in those towns and don't want these walls around them.
